Brixham Vets Championship 2021 - 9/10/21
The club had its first competition since early 2020 in a perfect day at Brixham on Saturday. The Veterans championships brought in 25 lady’s and 20 men’s teams on a bright, warm, calm day to face a straight 1.5K race.
The Yealm ladies started with a tough round and finished 4th in a very tight race, winning a place in the repechage race. Pressured with time to get to the line up whilst the men were racing, borrowed oars were necessary but didn’t delight and they pulled in a close last place. But with oars returned, they smashed their third race to come in third and qualify for the Ladies Plate Final. Considering a poor start and the 10K of rowing behind them they were rightly proud of a 4th place with a real battle with the 3rd placing boat coming up to the line. It won’t be long until a podium finish is realised.
As for the Men’s squad - they took a joint third in race one to move to the repechage race. Giddy whoops greeted the men to shore as they finished strong in first place to qualify for the semi-finals. That semi was to be the last race of the day though with the team finishing a creditable 4th place.
A boss return to racing. In fact, 21K more rowing experience. Special mention to both coxes - Rob Guy and Antonia Joyce, both coxing their first races for Yealm, as well as first time gig racers - Clare Smith, Paul Taylor and Pete Gough. Thanks to the various supporters who turned out, to Lizzie Stone and her son Ben who helped get our gig, Joker, out of the village for the race and the team captains and organisers.
A tease for the winter series. Yealm are getting stronger.
